“Nope.” Virginia dropped her supplies on the counter, then went back to retrieve a tomato and an onion and placed them next to her stockpile of food. Glancing over her shoulder, she said, “He’s a massage therapist.”

“Ooh. Good with his hands.”

“I wouldn’t know.”

Terri clucked her tongue. “Extrapolate, Vee. He’s a masseur, thus, he works with his hands. On clients’ bodies. Hee! I’m all sorts of giddy for you!”

I liked the way Terri thought.

“He’s a nice guy,” Virginia said, bringing the capers, cheese, and the package to the table, setting everything down. “Polite, and funny, and strong . . .”

“Strong?” Terri unwrapped the paper, revealing sliced lox. “Ooh. Did he use those strong hands on your shoulders? Give you a back massage?”

“Stop that. He beat up a mugger.”

“You were mugged?”

I winced; Terri’s voice had risen three octaves and probably had just deafened all the dogs in the area.

“Almost. Don stopped him. Disarmed him, knocked him out.”

Terri almost fell out of her chair. “Holy God, the mugger was armed? As in, armed and dangerous?”

Not as dangerous as her voice. I shook my head to clear it. Bishop’s balls, she could teach the banshees a thing or two.

“Yes, but Don took care of it.” Virginia pulled out a small tray from under the counter, then took out a knife from the butcher’s block. “You should’ve seen him. He knew exactly what to do. Me, I barely called the police without peeing myself, I was so scared. But him?” She let out a happy sigh, and my stomach tightened in pleasure from the sound. “He wasn’t scared at all. He was so confident, so strong.”

“What, a karate guy or something?”

“Guess so. It all happened so fast.” Virginia pulled out a hair band from her jeans pocket, tied back her thick curls so they were out of her face. As much as I liked her hair loose, I enjoyed the unobstructed view of her eyes. She said, “One minute, this total biker from hell’s coming at us with a knife. Then he’s on the sidewalk, out cold, the knife’s in the gutter, and Don’s shaking out his hand from punching him.”

Terri whistled her appreciation. “Nice! So did you meet when he rescued you? How romantic! I like the damsel-in-distress thing.”

“No, we were locked in an elevator for a half hour.” This said offhandedly as she started slicing the tomato.

Terri blinked. “Get out of here.”

“Seriously. He’d come up to see Mel, an appointment, but Mel pulled a Mel and wasn’t there. It was just me, locking up.” She dumped the tomato wedges into a bowl, brought it to the table. “So we got into the elevator, and next thing you know, it stops around the tenth floor.”

“Love in an elevator . . .”

Virginia grinned. “Nothing like that. We talked. Told really bad elevator stories.”

“Yeah, that sets the mood.”

“Please. He wasn’t hitting on me.”

“Then he’s an idiot.”

I smirked.

Terri eyed the rest of the breakfast fixings. “You sure you don’t want me to help?”

Virginia shook her head and walked back to the counter.
